Impact without borders

In times of crisis, fluency saves lives. This is especially so in situations involving diverse communities and the displacement of people, where access to critical services and information rests on the ability to communicate quickly and at scale. CLEAR Global is a non-profit dedicated to language access, including low-resource languages. Through research, a language platform and their linguist network Translators without Borders, they help humanitarian organizations deliver services in the native languages of affected populations.

What does this look like in practice? In Bangladesh, CLEAR Global supported the Rohingya community by providing language factsheets for humanitarian organizations. They also supported a bilingual education program for Marma-speaking children to democratize access to both literacy training and digital skills. In Nigeria, the NGO helped humanitarian groups to move beyond Hausa to include local languages such as Kanuri and Fulfulde, which helped grow the share of people receiving aid in their own language from 31 to 83%. Where humanitarian work spans cultures and countries, CLEAR Global helps NGOs speak the languages of the people they seek to help.

DeepL plays an important part in CLEAR Global’s work for select language pairs, allowing them to work efficiently and at scale.

• Scaling to reach more people: A large part of CLEAR Global's mission is to address the "four billion," people who speak marginalized languages and lack access to language technology. By using tools like DeepL, they can scale their services to a wider range of language pairs, helping to bridge this digital language divide and ensure that more people have access to the information they need to be safe and be heard.
