Sumitomo Corporation deploys DeepL for Enterprise Across the Organization

Through this deployment, Sumitomo Corporation has reduced translation time by more than half, enabling faster global information sharing and decision-making across its network of 123 locations in 62 countries. The adoption aligns with Sumitomo Corporation’s medium-term management plan, "Refine with Digital, Profit with Digital," under which the company is advancing company-wide digital transformation and leveraging DeepL as a key communications platform supporting its global operations.

Sumitomo Corporation operates an extensive global network spanning ten business groups, including Energy Transformation, Transportation & Construction Systems, and Digital AI. As collaboration across business groups and regions became increasingly important, the company faced significant communication challenges, including inconsistent translation quality,  high external vendor costs, and translation delays of several business days. An internal survey also showed strong employee demand for translation tools, with more than 80% of respondents indicating a need for such tools in their daily work.

To address these challenges, Sumitomo Corporation sought a solution that could provide high translation quality, robust security, and a licensing model suited to large-scale enterprise deployment. DeepL met these requirements through its compliance with international security standards, including GDPR and ISO 27001, and quickly emerged as the clear choice, earning strong support from employees who had expressed a desire for a reliable translation solution. Close collaboration between DeepL Japan and DeepL's global engineering teams further enabled single sign-on integration with Microsoft Entra ID, helping to meet Sumitomo Corporation's security requirements. Since adopting DeepL for Enterprise, Sumitomo Corporation has cut its multilingual translation time by more than half. Translation processes that previously took several business days have been significantly shortened, while reliance on native-language checks and external translation providers have also been reduced.

In addition, DeepL’s ability to translate PDF and PowerPoint files while preserving original layouts has reduced the need for post-translation editing and formatting. The company is also using DeepL’s glossary function to standardize specialized terminology –  such as company names, department names, and corporate principles – improving the quality of external-facing documents while reducing the risk of inconsistent terminology and mistranslations.

These efficiencies have reduced both translation costs and administrative workload, freeing employees to focus on higher-value activities and supporting the execution of Sumitomo Corporation’s broader digital transformation strategy.
