Meet DeepL: embracing inclusion and allyship in the workplace

At DeepL, inclusion is more than a principle—it’s something we strive to embody in everything we do. Creating a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued starts with listening to the experiences of our people.

We sat down with Laura North, Legal Operations Specialist, to talk about what inclusion looks like in practice—from navigating the workplace as an LGBTQIA+ professional to the importance of allyship, representation, and community.

In this conversation, Laura shares how DeepL’s culture has empowered her to show up authentically, connect meaningfully, and thrive. Let’s dive into her story.

Introduce yourself and your role at DeepL

Hey, I’m Laura! I work as a Legal Operations Specialist on DeepL’s Legal team. My role involves implementing new processes and technologies that enable us to work efficiently, protect our brand, and provide the necessary data for our team to inform its advice to the business.

I have worked in in-house legal roles for the past four years, and I love seeing how the role of data and technology is evolving within legal departments.

What are some common barriers LGBTQIA+ employees face in their careers, and what role can inclusion play in breaking them down?

For LGBTQIA+ people, barriers to career progression can begin long before joining a workplace. We have to consider whether a company is truly safe and whether its values align with our own. During the hiring process, we may face bias—and even after securing a role, we’re left wondering: can we be our authentic selves here? Will our contributions be valued, or will we face discrimination or resistance? And if we can’t be ourselves, what toll will that take on our wellbeing?

That’s why making inclusion a core part of the workplace is so important. It ensures that marginalized communities have equal access to opportunity—from how products are built to the policies that shape company culture.

In your view, what does effective allyship look like—and why is it essential in the workplace?

Effective allyship goes beyond vocal support—it requires consistent, meaningful action. This is especially crucial in the workplace, where LGBTQIA+ people are often underrepresented and face systemic barriers to growth. Allies should call out any instances of discrimination, whether direct or indirect. One thing I truly value about DeepL is our culture of open communication and our openness to new ideas that uplift and support our communities.

How can non-LGBTQIA+ colleagues at DeepL actively contribute to a more inclusive environment?

In my opinion, staying informed is the best way to actively contribute to a more inclusive environment. It is imperative to keep up to date with current topics that impact your LGBTQIA+ colleagues and, importantly, how they feel about them. In a world where our community—in particular our trans members—are being routinely targeted, understanding that your LGBTQIA+ colleagues' experiences may differ from your own is vital. It’s critical to consider this when making decisions or communicating with your colleagues.

At DeepL, we have open channels where people can share, listen, and support one another. I encourage everyone to get involved—it’s a great way to build awareness and connection.

What role have DeepL’s support networks or communities played in helping you grow, connect, or feel empowered?

When I started at DeepL, one of the first communities I joined was the PROUD- AI network. One of the most impactful things for me has been the wealth of resources available, including the Coming Out Support that DeepL offers. It made me reflect on my own career journey, and the lack of support I faced when I came out early in my career. I felt lost and unsupported, which had a huge impact on my well-being and my work at the time. Knowing that DeepL provides support like this empowered me to be open about who I am from the beginning of my time at DeepL and to engage with the community as much as possible.

What would you say to someone in the LGBTQIA+ community who is considering joining DeepL?

I might be biased, but I’d say: hit apply! DeepL has a growing, vibrant LGBTQIA+ community and leaders who are genuinely committed to making it a great place to work for everyone.

At DeepL, we’re proud to foster a workplace where every voice matters and authenticity is celebrated. Laura’s story is a powerful reminder that inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a daily practice.

This Pride Month and beyond, we invite you to join us in building a more inclusive future—one where everyone can thrive, be seen, and be supported.
